Suction Machine is an electric portable device used to clear the upper airway, oral cavity, and tracheostomy of secretions in patients unable to manage their own secretions. It uses negative pressure to aspirate secretions through a catheter into a collection jar, maintaining airway patency in patients with dysphagia, neuromuscular disease, or tracheostomy.

OxyCare supplies portable suction machines with all required catheters, tubing, and collection jars, and provides instruction on safe suctioning technique during equipment setup. Rental is available.

Set-up

1. Place machine on a sturdy, flat surface near the patient.
2. Connect collection bottle to the suction machine.
3. Attach connecting tubing to the bottle.
4. Plug machine into an electrical outlet and turn machine on. Cover the opening of the tube to check vacuum suction pressure.
5. After each use rinse tubing with a cup of water to clear tubing.
6. Contents should be emptied into the toilet a minimum of once per day. Or, if the suction bottle is over 1/2 full - contents should be emptied.
7. Patient/Caregiver demonstrates each step and has a solid understanding.

Cleaning

1. Clean set-up every 24 hours.
2. Wash suction bottle, tubing and Yankauer tube in warm soapy water. Discard catheters after each use.
3. Soak for 30 minutes in a mixture of 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water. Rinse well. Air dry.
4. Dispose of tubing and Yankauer after 2 weeks continuous use.
5. Change filter monthly, or if overflow occurs.

1. Make sure to keep set-up clean. Have spare components available at all times.
2. Be sure to use a safe electrical outlet and no extension cords.
